Engraving wedding rings
There are as many possible engravings as ways to express yourself; the only constraint is the size of the ring. Therefore, it is often limited in words but not in creativity or originality.
To help you navigate, we present some categories, but you might want to create new ones!
Classic:
This typically includes first names or initials, as well as a date dear to the couple.
Romantic:
These are usually words of love.
Duo:
The message begins on one ring and finishes on the other.
Encrypted:
Only the couple can understand the message.
Nickname:
This consists of either one's own nickname or the couple's nickname. One person's ring can also be engraved with the other's nickname, and vice versa.
Geographic:
This provides the geographic coordinates of a location.
Geographic coordinates are traditionally expressed in the sexagesimal system, sometimes noted as "DMS": degrees ( ° ) minutes ( ′ ) seconds ( ″ ). The basic unit is the degree of angle (1 full turn = 360°), then the arcminute (1° = 60′), then the arcsecond (1° = 3600″).
As an example, the DMS coordinates for Paris are: 41°24’12’’N 2°10’26.5’’E
Religious:
These are quotes from a religious text or a reference.
Symbolic:
This consists of an astrological sign or an animal. It can be seen as an "inverted signet ring" with a sign or emblem hidden from public view.
Emoji:
And yes, this ultimate "innovation" is also possible.
When and how engraving is done
Laser engraving is used for many materials, including gold, as it allows for finer designs or more legible writing than the mechanical method.
Engraving takes place just before the setting stage: the diamonds have not yet been attached to the piece of jewelry. The laser can therefore engrave the metal without risking damage to the stones!
First, the engravings are drawn using software, then the ring is placed on a dedicated machine. Once the ring is secured on three sides, the engraving is then automatically done by laser according to the parameters saved on the machine. During this stage, the gold is heated so powerfully by the laser beam that it burns to reveal the chosen words or numbers, thus making the engraving permanent and very resistant.
The jewelry must then be carefully cleaned so that the engraving magically appears.
