Culture Jo Ep #4: Gold

The first episodes were about diamonds… now let’s talk about gold!

Our jewelry is made from 18-karat gold. We offer a choice of yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold. But what does “18 karats” mean? And where does gold come from?

✨ To start, look up at the stars 🌟: that’s where gold comes from. Several scientific theories evoke a cosmic catastrophe, which would have generated an explosion and collision of stars in space, leading to the formation of gold in the Earth’s core (where it is present in large quantities).

It is a rare and very resistant metal: it is the most precious and coveted in the world. 👑

✨ Gold was first discovered in the form of yellow nuggets (in its natural state). It is present everywhere on the globe, on land and in the oceans, but is scattered in such small quantities that it is difficult to recover.

Today, gold is used for various purposes, but 70% of its production is used to make jewelry.

✨ Surprisingly, pure gold is quite a soft metal! It is not rigid enough to be worn as is: the gold used in jewelry is therefore very often an alloy of gold with several metals, in order to give it more solidity.

✨ A quick reminder about gold: its purity is measured in Carats.

The higher the caratage, the more gold there is in the alloy and the purer the gold.

The Carat is therefore a unit of measurement (which measures a proportion, a percentage) divided into 24 equal parts. Pure gold is therefore "24-carat" gold: 24 parts out of 24 are gold!

Be careful! Don't get confused: the "Carat" of gold is a different unit from the "Carat" used in gemology for stones. 😜

✨ Different alloys exist on the market: they differ according to their gold percentage:

24-carat gold contains 100% gold: noble but dangerous because the metal is soft and therefore deforms.

18-carat or 750 parts per thousand gold is the most robust and durable alloy over time.

Did you follow? 18 carats, then, since 18 parts out of 24 are gold; which corresponds to 75% pure gold! 18-carat gold is the noblest gold on the market, the one we use, just like the great jewelry houses.

✨ But... what are the remaining 25% made of? They vary according to the desired gold shade:

Rose gold: 75% gold, 5% silver, 20% copper

Yellow gold: 75% gold, 12.5% silver, 12.5% copper

White gold: 75% gold, 25% silver, copper, and palladium

✨ Gold is eternal… and can be reused infinitely.

Our foundries specialize in gold recycling: they source small gold beads from refiners who only process recycled gold. They recover gold sold by buy/sell shops, melt down old-fashioned jewelry, jewelry workshop scraps, or industrial gold.

The traceable recovered gold is melted, refined, and finally combined with different alloys to create our recycled 18-karat gold. 💚

So, did you know that?

See you next week 💫
