Lost-wax casting is a technique that has existed since… Antiquity!
It is a process in which molten metal replaces a resin object placed in a mold by melting it.
We use this technique to make our jewelry in the workshop: we combine very modern methods with ancient manufacturing techniques.
Here are the detailed steps:
✨ Creation
The jewelry is imagined by Héloïse, who designs all our pieces and manually places diamonds side by side on a kind of modeling clay to create her random compositions. ✍🏼
✨ 3D Design
These compositions are then modeled by Astrid, head of 3D design, working with Héloïse, who adjusts them as she wishes. We spend a lot of time on 3D design: like an architect, the notions of height and volume are essential to us. These notions cannot be studied flat on a drawing, so we work a lot in volume.
✨ 3D Printing
The first model of the jewel is printed in resin using a 3D printer. This is the first version of the jewel in volume: it is a plastic representation of the jewel designed in 3D. 🖨
✨ Plaster Casting
The resin model goes to the founder. It is covered with plaster, then the plaster is left to rest until it is completely dry.
✨ Wax Melting
Once the plaster is dry, it is heated. It is at this stage that the wax is said to be "lost": it melts and can now give way to molten metal. The wax model inside melts, then molten gold replaces it. 🔥
✨ Metal Casting
The molten 18-carat recycled gold replaces the resin and takes its shape... then it hardens to become the first metal draft of the future jewel. This will then have to pass through the hands of different trades for the next stages. 💎🔨💫
