If gold were used in its pure state for jewelry making, the metal would be too "soft" and the jewelry would deform at the slightest impact. Gold must therefore be combined with another precious metal. 18-carat gold (also written 18k, 18ct or 18kt) is one of the most well-known gold purities in the jewelry world in Europe and worldwide.
The carat is a unit of measurement system invented in the 14th century. The carat symbol (ct, or k/kt) is a measure of gold purity: one carat represents 1/24th of the total mass of an alloy. In the case of 18-carat gold, this means that for every 24 grams of gold, there are 18 grams of pure gold and 6 grams of other metals. 18-carat gold is therefore composed of 75.01% "pure gold", and is also called "750/1000°" gold. 18-carat gold jewelry is very resistant and its high gold content allows it to be worn without fear of allergies.
18-carat gold is therefore the most suitable and qualitative alloy for jewelry: it is the most resistant to breakage, corrosion, scratches, and wear over time. At Héloïse & Abélard, our jewelry is made exclusively from 18-carat gold, like the great jewelry Houses. Our H&A jewelry is all engraved "750" because their gold weight is often between 1 and 2 grams maximum. There is no eagle head hallmark because this is reserved for jewelry weighing more than 3 grams.
The composition of 18-carat gold differs depending on the color of the gold:
- 18-carat yellow gold: 75% pure gold + 12.5% silver + 12.5% copper
- 18-carat grey or white gold: 75% pure gold + 25% (silver; copper and palladium)
At H&A, our 18-carat rose gold, which is very slightly pink, almost champagne, is an alloy composed of 75% pure gold + 5% silver + 20% copper. We love its soft and feminine color, which brings modernity to our recycled diamonds.
