The Bible refers several times to the trade of rubies, and according to apocryphal writings, the Queen of Sheba is said to have offered King Solomon a ruby from Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Moreover, due to its scarlet red color, which can symbolize the blood of Christ, rubies appear on several crowns of Christian sovereigns and adorned the rings of cardinals until the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). For Hindus, it was named ratna raj, meaning "queen of precious stones."

Ruby is from the Corundum family, like sapphire. Its color is mainly caused by the presence of chromium atoms; without this presence, it would be a sapphire.
Ruby anniversaries symbolize 35 years of marriage.

Its market value depends on several factors: its size, color, purity, and cut. As all natural rubies have inclusions, only synthetic rubies can give the impression of being perfect. In 1902, the Frenchman Auguste Verneuil produced a synthetic ruby by melting aluminum oxide powder with a red dye.

Rubies are mined in Africa, Asia, Australia, and certain American states such as Montana and South Carolina. The main deposits are found in Burma, Mozambique, as well as Sri Lanka and Madagascar.

The "Peace Ruby" was discovered in Burma on June 30, 1919 (two days after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles); it is round and weighs 25 carats.
It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.
