May: Emerald

Are you looking to find out which birthstone corresponds to the month of May? The Heloise & Abelard Guide tells you more about each birthstone and...the Emerald!

Mai : Émeraude

May: Emerald

May's birthstone is the emerald.

The word emerald is said to derive from the Greek, itself a distortion of the Persian word "zamarat," which means "heart of stone."

Its presence was already mentioned in Babylon, in the 2nd millennium BC, where it was used as currency. During the ancient Egyptian period, near the Red Sea, there were emerald mines. Cleopatra was known for her passion for emeralds.

In Roman times, an emerald lens was mentioned, used as an optical instrument by Emperor Nero, who reportedly used it to correct his myopia when watching gladiator fights.

"The emerald does not lose its value for lack of praise," Marcus Aurelius. The emerald experienced a new surge with the discovery of Colombian deposits by the Spanish in the 16th century, the emeralds found there being much larger than those previously known.

In India, the "Great Mogul" stone, discovered in 1695, weighs 217.80 carats and measures approximately 10 cm. The Maharajahs were fond of this stone, which explains why the most important emerald cutting center is located in Jaipur, India.
Today, the main producing countries of natural emeralds are Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Madagascar, and Nigeria.

In jewelry, it is mainly cut into an "emerald" (rectangular with cut corners), "cabochon," "pear," or "oval" shape. The emerald is one of the most expensive precious stones. The very frequent presence of inclusions, gracefully called "frosts" or poetically "gardens," is not a handicap, as it can attest to the stone's origin; some unique characteristics are even highly sought after.
Emerald has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale.
