History & Origin

The name tourmaline encompasses several minerals from the silicate family. Its name comes from thuramali or thoramalli in Sinhalese, the language of Sri Lanka, which means "the stone of a thousand colors" or "mixed-colored stone."
Its wide range of colors (black, green, brown, yellow, red, pink, blue, yellow, colorless, or multicolored) is explained by the different chemical elements that compose it: iron, manganese, nickel, cobalt, titanium.

It is a crystal that appears in the form of elongated rods or needles grouped in a network. Its cross-section is triangular with curved faces.

Initially imported into Europe by the Dutch East India Company, tourmalines are found on all continents.
The main deposits of green tourmaline are found in Brazil and Madagascar.

Like diamonds, tourmalines have properties that can be very practical. For example, when heated, its two ends accumulate opposite electrical charges, which can attract dust via static electricity. For this reason, this mineral is also found in hair straighteners, with the aim of eliminating static electricity.

Characteristics

Green tourmaline, also known as verdelite, is a variety of tourmaline that comes in different shades of green. Always with a transparent appearance.
Tourmaline has a hardness between 7 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
